John,
According to "A History of Engineering and Science in the Bell System:
National Service in War and Peace", pp. 87-88, the Friis group at Bell Labs
in Holmdel, NJ developed a mortar-locator radar, type AN/TPQ-2. The book
doesn't have a picture of the set, but there is a drawing showing how the
beams intersected the shell's trajectory. I'll scan and post it ASAP.

Subject: [Milsurplus] "Rocking Horse" Scanner
Does anyone have a decent pic or description of the "Rocking Horse" radar
scanner. It was apparently developed by Harad Friis for a mortar locating
radar
in WW II. Also, if you have the nomenclature of set(s) that used it, it
would be
appreciated.
Best,
-John
