Once more, into the breech.
The common audio plugs in service from 19 uhmmm to about 1949 were PL-54
(black barrel stubby high impedance bale-out), PL-354 (red barrel stubby low
impedance bale-out), PL-55 (black barrel general audio use) and PL-68 (microphone
and LS-3 and whatever the field-coil predecessor to the LS-3 was). The Navy
had a similar run with both five-digit and NAF numbers.
The red band around Navy nomenclatured 7/32" diamater PL-68 equivalents has
nothing to do with this. It was because of a change in Tip/Ring assignments,
nothing to do with impedance. Early production of RS-38's had the PTT switch
on the ring instead of the tip. You should check this before attempting to use
an RS-38 with plug without the red band, regardless of what the nomenclature
on the plug is.
Post-war, the Navy type numbers and NAF numbers were dropped and the PL-
numbers all changed to PJ-0 numbers. And a color indicator letter added to some.
PL-54 and PL-540 (I never figure out what the difference was) became PJ-054B.
PL-354 became PJ-054R. PL-55 became PJ-055B. PL-68 became PJ-068. And the
bale-out female cable connector JK-26 became JJ-026.
So if it says PL- or JK-, it was made before about 1949 or it's a postwar
copy and not military at all (these are mostly Japanese copies and very crudely
made - Fair had a bunch of their RS-38's once and I had the misfortune to buy
some). If it says PJ-0 or JJ-0 it's definitely postwar. -30-
