Anyone familiar with the new Isolated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT)?
They're normally used in DC power switching and are the controlling
componants of the new generation of battery-operated car motors.
Can they be biased for linear operation, and thus used in audio?
I'm thinking of plate modulation without a big plate transformer.
I'm also thinking of B+ level control without a variac.
I've done this before at lower voltages with standard bipolars,
and I think MOSFETS will work fine as well, but these things
can handle up to as much as 3300 volts VCE (woof!) at multiple amps.
You can get one that will do 1500 volts at 10 amps for *two bucks*.
Would be pretty cool to modulate my 4-1000 AM rig
with these in the B+ line, but they gotta work linear to do that.
