So you remove the power connector at rear of
receiver and replace with a couple of crudely
cut and painted and mounted plates. You put
an off/ on relay inside. On the front panel, you
add a control panel larger than the original 
adapter, have this panel painted gloss black,
change to BNC antenna connector, and use
a large spinner knob for the tuning. Hey, looks
great, don't it! What a curio, an actual WW2
era relic, "an interesting topic of discussion",
for your very worthwhile conversion effort.
( After all, conversion is necessary. )  
The author had a long engineering career.
