That is EXACTLY the stuff that kept me out of Amateur radio until I was in my mid-40's: Couple of bad/neutral encounters; cold shoulder, or sometimes, no shoulder at all. 

So, enjoy your cuppa while on Holiday. They'll be gone eventually, victims of attrition, and the Hobby will be all the better.

Conversely, "pests" at my local club kept after me after I showed them some of my homebrew xtal sets, and here I am: up to my eyeballs in old gear, active in the club and the Hobby, and happy as a clam.
