Mike Davidsen, All -

Book restorers have the same problem and gave me this solution. Direct sunlight exposure for no more than 30 minutes.

On a dry, bright sunny day expose the mold areas to 30 minutes of sun light. With a clean cloth or brush: brush ... brush the mold areas. I have done this it works. I went one step further.

I then placed the item in a clear plastic bag and then placed (sachet or vented container with chlorine tablets) over a few days then re-exposed for 30 minutes, the lot, to another round of direct high sun light. This makes sure the mold is killed. Re-Brushed the areas of mold, dried up and gone. Then repacked in bag containing the tablets for another 48 hours just to make sure. No water needed. The chlorine tablets gassed out rather well. The sunlight, chlorine gas, and brushing did a good job killing and removing the dead mold.

For old documents do not expose pages for more than 30 minutes at a time. Gently Wipe or brush using clean cloth rags or soft brush. I think this keeps the ink from fading. --> Must use clean rags or brushes, changed frequently, to remove dead mold spores. <--

See your local Pool supply dealer. Also note that (Kaboom Toilet Bowl Cleaner Canister) found in the grocery store contains nothing but chlorine, tablets or crystals, in a vented plastic canister. Normally the canister is hooked up in line with the toilet fill valve.
