It all depends on the design criteria. If you are designing for low 
losses, low weight, etc, you will want thin laminations. You merely want 
one that works, so use what you have. First try available 60 cycle 
transformers, then play with transformer design. It isn't hard. Using 
modest flux density the core losses won't be too high, and it will work 
fine with thick (12-14 mil) laminations. 60 cycle power transformers 
have been successfully used as modulation transformers, so operation at 
400 cycles is no big deal.
