The 6 pin connector is also used to power and load keys into voice
scramblers. That might account for the (stupid) restrictions.

It may be worth noting that PRC-74A and later models use a 6 pin audio
connector, and plain -74 versions may have been modified  (MWO
11-5820-35/1) to have the 6 pin connector.  The mating 6 pin connector
is a U-329/U.  Has something to do with sending CW.
