The clueless jokers that wrote that report should go to any power
boating store, where they can buy Gen III night vision gear, likely
better than mil spec, over the counter for cash.
As to F-14 parts, it's only a meaningful claim if the part is actually
something that breaks on the plane. Likely 99.9% of the parts never need
replacing during its service life. But it's sure a headline grabber.
Some years ago (OK, many) an acquaintance managed to con the papers into
publishing a story titled "Is this MIT Student the World's Fifth Nuclear
Power?" and the guy was shown in front of a surplus rocket engine. He
was no where close. The same guy later sued GE about a patent using
Carbon 14 in high energy laser weapon mirrors and got a segment on 60
Minutes out of it.
The media are totally clueless and gullible on scientific and technology
issues. So are the politicos.
