You can see these little whiskers when
they first start to grow.  Shine a pen
light parallel and close to the surface,
and look for the little sparkles that
appear.  I've never seen them on aluminum.
Trivia:  When those guys at Bell Labs
discovered the transistor it was during
a study of what happens on the surface
of various elements, and their reaction
