Todd,
It's not thin humo[u]r at all. It's just _British_ humo[u]r, which
we here in the States generally don't know how to handle. I recommend
heavy applications of Terry-Thomas, Benny Hill, and Monty Python among
others.
On a more serious note, I haven't seen it mentioned here, and so will
note that Sir Arthur C. Clarke died last month. In addition to being a
futurist of note and a writer of good science fiction, he was a radar
technician, and later instructor, in the glowbug era. I suspect that
more than a few radar sets got tweaked up by him, and a lot more by
techs whom he taught.
He invented the idea of communications satellites in geosynchronous
(or "Clarke") orbit, but published the notion before he applied for a
patent, rendering it unpatentable.
I think an extraordinarily appropriate and fitting monument to Sir
Arthur would be a space elevator with his name on it. Think of the
range you could get with an ARC-5 from a few hundred miles up! And it
would only get better as you ascended.
"Si monumentum requiris, videte desursum!"
(If you need a monument, look overhead!")
