I've had an operating Teletype machine with the cover off at some shows.
Of course you have to be careful they don't put their fingers in places
where they will get hurt - a plexiglass cover would be better.

Something they do at the NSA museum is to have a sort of treasure hunt
for the kids - several sheets of paper that ask questions, and you have
to look at the exhibits to find the answers.  Also they have an Enigma
machine that you can put your hands on, and the kids are given a message
to decode.  But this seemed to be beyond the skills or patience of
some of them when I was watching.
