Rich,
I'm not certain why, but the U-182/U and U-229/U are the worst of all of the
O-ring sealed bayonet coupling connectors that I've encountered. I suspect
that if you could push hard enough, you would cave in the panel before you would
get a dry O-ring in the cable connector to pop over the nose of the U-183/U
chassis connector.
I tried ordinary silicone grease as well as an O-ring lubricant made by
Parker. Both worked fine. I can't say which would last longer. Saliva usually
only works once.
If you are ever caught out somewhere trying to attach a handset or etc that
has a dry O-ring, and no grease of any sort on hand, simply remove the O-ring
from the cable connector. Also, the proper way in which to lube the O-ring is
to remove it from the connector so that you get grease on the OD as well as
the ID. And put a thin smear on the chassis connector as well.
