I am awaiting the arrival of a R-138 Shortwave receiver recently acquired off of eBay. The info noted was that it was contracted on 12-29-1948 to the L.R. Dooley Co. for US Coast Guard use. It tunes .2 to .4kc and .49kc to 19 mc, with 6 bands, xtal filter and 11 tubes (info from eBay). I may have some info coming from someone who needed the name plate info, but I am wondering if any of you are familiar with this receiver. So far I haven't had much luck on the I-net.

  1. What did the Coast Guard use this rcvr for and was it just for CG use?
  2. Was there a transmitter associated with it?
  3. Any info on the L.R. Dooley Co.?
  4. Any manuals/schematic/alignment info available?
  5. How well does it work?
  6. What imped. speaker is required?
  7. Does it have any other military designation/number?
  8. Did I see some ads for this rcvr in '50's CQ and/or QST's?

>From what I've seen from the info presented, it looks like it may be a fair receiver. It almost looks like it could be in the same general category as the R-100/URR morale rcvr, but with the xtal filter, I question that assumption.

Any help/comments, etc will be greatly appreciated......de Bill K4JYS
