I don't know how the battle planning was communicated.
The TBS DID get a lot of action, both in port and at sea.
Maybe in port, most of the procedures were defined
and communicated. Even tho the communications were
simple AM voice, on a low VHF frequency, and on crystal
pre-set frequencies, simple battle codes removed the chance
that overheard communications could be deciphered quickly
enuff to serve the enemy, in an actual combat situation.
The ships had code names, not numbers. I don't recall
how often the ship codes were changed. A lot of what
i've learned about this comes from the book, "Navy
Retread". Also, the ship code names were not widely
known; ships in need to know were given what they needed;
other ships even in the same group, had to guess who the
name applied to. I would think that in a battle situation,
blinker would be much too slow, altho do i recall that some
use was made even in battle, of signal flags? I need to
look into this more. -Hue
