Spain had a number of colonies in Africa, including the Western part of
Morocco, which was then called Spanish Morocco. Spain had the same concerns
as France regarding her African colonies: insurgency, wakening nationalism
which was financed and encouraged by the USSR. It was expedient to keep some
rapid response forces too be able to intervene if her interests in these
colonies are threatened.

As to the choice of JU-52: the Spanish industry manufactured some German
military aircraft for the Spanish Air Force by license during WW2: the JU-52
was manufactured by CASA and the ME-109 was made by Hispano-Suiza.

It stands to reason that even after WW2, some successful aircraft would be
still manufactured in Spain, as no retooling was necessary and the Air Force
logistics support was used to this type of aircraft.

Mike, why do you suppose Spain went to the JU-52?
Was the USA still miffed at Spain over the pro-Axis stance
in WW2, preventing acquisition of US war-surplus?
I wonder if the engineers brought the drawings with them,
or if it was a total reverse-engineer.

I also wonder why Spain needed a paratroop force, but
i'll leave that to them. I have noticed currently a number of
smaller countries have paratroops, or so-called paratroop
forces, a laffable proposition, but i suppose it is a prestige
item for the country and for the most fit of their military men.
