[Milsurplus] TG-5 vs EE-8

What was the use of the TG-5 field telegraph set? why were so many built? looks like the EE-8 would be far better and simpler to use, were the TG-5 used for long range communications where the EE-8 would die out? I can see the TG-5 being used in the early days between the wars but looking at the numbers of TG-5 sets around they must have been produced beyond 1940 but can not see what good they were compared to a field phone.
