I forgot to mention earlier that in the 1960 era at Edwards AFB there
was some outfit on base that periodically had to fly a mission to Europe
where there was little in the way of 225-400 MHz capability in the air
traffic control system.  (In the U.S. the FAA acquired military GRC-27
equipment to give it the ability to talk to military aircraft).  So in
the frequency manager's office there was a big suitcase filled with
ARC-3 crystals, which they would check out when they were going to fly
that mission.
