In the 1960 time frame the military was prohibited from buying any
new VHF air-band gear, as part of the move to the military UHF
(225-400 MHz) band. Or so I was told. Anyway at Edwards AFB we
had a requirement to operate a lot of frequencies in the civilian
VHF aviation band, so we did it using a lot of ARC-3 equipment and
AC power supplies to run it. I guess the alternative was the BC-640
transmitter and the BC-639 receivers, which were a lot more war-weary
than the ARC-3 equipment.
