A quick check to make on your portable  antenna system to see if a counter 
poise wire will improve your  signal is to connect it and then quickly 
disconnect it  while listening to your receiver----if  the noise on the 
receiver drops after disconnecting then the counterpoise is helping. Always 
tie off the counterpoise wire and use small wire size  because when the wire 
gets caught on someone's vehicle  it drags your radio behind it.
