When I flew as aircrew in E-2 Hawkeye aircraft, I went to a lot of airshows
and displayed the aircraft. Afterwards, I spent about two hours going over
the aircraft with a careful eye. You would be surprised how many people
think engine and cooler intakes are made for disposing of their soda cans
and other trash. If the public is let inside, every knob (mechanical and
electrical) and switch was subject to being operated. I would have to check
every control box, and there are a lot on that plane. Anything not bolted
down was subject to walking away. It was as it every "Remove Before Flight"
tag said "take me home" on the flip side. It was a pain, but it was worth
the effort for those who respected other people's property. I really
enjoyed discussing the aircraft and mission to interested visitors.
