That is an interesting story.
I had something similar happen to me using UPS.
They wanted to pick up the damaged radio and send it to
their central evaluation center. I said, okay, but you have
to buy it first. You have already proven that you can't
provide safe handling, you wouldn't want me to have to call
you on attempted theft too.
They gave up, settled the claim, and let me keep the radio.
I cannot stress the importance of good packing before
shipment. The only thing more important is a carrier who
recognizes bad packing before accepting it for shipment. I
figure once they accept it, it becomes their problem for
safe delivery regardless of how badly it was packed.
Blaming the damage on bad packing is sort of like the guy
whoes alibi is that he did not know the gun was loaded.
