For what it is worth, my father served on submarines during WWII as a Chief Electrician's Mate and told me that the radio operators could clearly identify which boat was sending by the operator's fist.
He told me of one event where the boat was coming in with damage and Pearl was going to have it attacked, thinking it was a Japanese sub trying to sneak in, except for the radio operator at the base recognized the operator's fist and was convinced the sub was legit. May or may not be true, but he insisted the account is was accurate.
