Its possible to recognize "fists" with individual keying characterstics when using "Bugs" or any other key. Its much simpler to relate the signal signature to a particular transmitter or callsign by storing a portion of the signal and analyzing the "print" of the signal.
Each keyed transmitter has a unique "on-off" keying signature due to power supply time constants among other things. the operators cw rhythm can act as further confirmation. I once did this on recordings of the same operator , two years apart and found complete correlation between the dot-dash ratio and the rise and fall times of the keyed signal.
