[Milsurplus] NYC Surplus stores?

Hi Ralph:

You're about 38 years too late for most of it -- Chambers St. "Radio
Row" was torn down in the late 60's to make way for the World Trade
Center. There were a few places on Long Island, about 25 miles east,
but they're gone also. Not sure what, if anything of interest, is
around the Canal Street area. Last time I was there, it was mostly
import junk -- "odd lot" general merchandise.

A Google search on Barry Electronics shows them at 99 2nd Ave -- about
five blocks north of E. Houston St. There's a phone number, but their
website comes up bad -- www.barryradio.com I don't think they've sold
any surplus for a long time if ever -- mostly ham gear and parts.

There's the remnant of a smaller uptown radio row -- 45th Street between
5th & 6th Avenues. Still shows a listing for Taft Electronics at 20 W
45th St. There were mostly audiophile dealers there and I remember a
model train store, one flight down. It might still be an interesting
short walk and it's in midtown. Taft is/was an old time electronics
store with parts and test equipment, etc. -- some surplus parts. I
don't recall any mil surplus there.

If you can get over to Brooklyn, there's Leeds Electronics -- get a
preview on their web site -- www.leedselect.com. They have a lot of NOS
parts. Of course, you can also order off their webs site and by phone.
Heh heh -- the home page says you can get there from Manhattan by
bicycle -- and if you go that way, you get a free box o' parts.

Yeah, we used to have a small surplus place in Hempstead, one in
Freeport on Sunrise Highway, and a big electronics/amateur place --
Harrison on Route 110 in Farmingdale, I think. All gone a long time ago.

Good hunting. Sorry about the slim pickin's.

Barry
