Nice photographs and write-up.  The microphone shown in one of the photos is 
a 51006 or 51006-A.  Determination was hindered by the fact that the manuals 
refer to it as MI-401 instead of by the 5-digit Navy Type Number but I've 
concluded that this is the microphone originally shipped and used with the TBO and 
early TBX's.  And that the 51004 (RS-38) was used with the TBX-8.

The 51006 is a 100 ohm carbon microphone about half again larger in diameter 
than the RS-38, and as long as it is wide.  It has two metal tabs that stick 
out radially from the rear surface at about 4:30 and 7:30 relative to the PTT 
button at 12:00.  They have holes at the outer ends lined with rubber grommets. 
 I've guessed that they may have been for use on some sort of chest set 
frame, as if you hang the mic by either one it hangs at an odd angle with the cord 
kinked.  The output of the 51006 is considerably higher than that of the 51004 
when in the same bias circuit.
