When I was stationed in Tokyo, with TDY to Korea,
during the Korean War, the Japanese did a lot of
contract work for the Army.  No, the Japanese
weren't officially in that war.  We were in
Japan because we were occupying Japan at the
time.  From '60 through '64 I was on Okinawa, lot
of TDY to the Tokyo area, and Japanese had their
Self Defence Force well established by then.
Their Air Force Headquarters was in the same
buildings as our 5th Air Force Headquarters at
Fuchu.  Soon they were cloning one or more of
our combat and cargo aircraft, so it follows that
they were cloning other things as well.  All
legal, and under supervision of DOD and others.
