T-827(*)/URT is a 2-30 MC/S exciter. Output level is on the close order of
100 mW. Output modes are CW, FSK, AM (compatible), LSB, USB and ISB. It was
originally a component of AN/WRC-1 (along with R-1051/URR and AM-3007/URT) and as
such replaced the TCS on small and large combatants and service craft. This
phase-in replacement began in the late 60's. Late WW-II and just post-war
vintage vessels mostly did not receive the replacement as they were in the process
of being de-commissioned during that period. Later, it was also used as the
exciter in the medium power (1 KW) AN/URT-23.

Numerous models were built, with the "J" possibly being the final one.

On the ham bands, the AN/WRC-1 has the advantage over the AN/URC-35 that it
is not a transceiver and the receiver can be tuned off of the transmitter
frequency if necessary without disturbing the transmitter settings. I have been
thinking recently about looking for a T-827 and converting my AN/URC-35B plus
R-1051B to AN/WRC-1B. Sitting beside my TCS-12, it would be a sorta old set and a
not quite so old set side by side. :-)
