I think more and more folks are doing this to avoid the extra/excess
fees ebay charges for everything from reserve price auction to
sneezing on Tuesday. Probably cheaper in the long run just to eat the
initial listing fees and move on if it doesn't get the bids you hope
for. The down side is the fact that many folks bid in the last few
seconds, so you really can't tell what the final price would or could
be until it's too late.

Ebay is certainly the ultimate market for sellers concerned with
higest possible selling price and high-end buyers, but like anything
else, only represents a slice of pricing across the board. For those
who don't want to look around and beat the bushes by checking
classified ads, attending hamfests and so on, it has to be the best
thing to them since sliced bread. And it does provide a plethora of
items from parts to rare artifacts - something you don't see in any
one place outside of a good radio museum.
