Jim,
I used SSB-1's back when they were new and in Navy service. Being used to
R-390A's, R-1051's, AN/URC-32's, AN/URT-23's, etc. etc. I thought they were junk
then and 30+ years of fading memories hasn't done anything to change my mind.
I thought the same thing then and now about rice boxes, too. In 36 years of
hamming, I've owned literally hundreds of military sets versus three Icom
(two mobile and one HT), zero Kenwood, zero Yaesu, zero any other brand.
So my reason for the brake pad (when I first used them it would have been
brake shoe) comment was that regardless of vintage, I don't like the damn things.
