I'm surprised someone else hasn't chimed in. The RCA SSB-1 dates from the
end of the period when all Naval Reserve Centers and Training Facilities kept
daily radio schedules with the COMSTA at their respective Naval District. It
was the replacement for the TCK's, TBL's, etc. that every Center or TF used to
be equipped with. It appeared around the same time as the AN/WRC-1 and
AN/URC-35, and the only excuse I ever saw for buying it was that it must have been
CHEAP.

It worked OK for what it did, I suppose, but I frankly wouldn't expend brake
pad on stopping to pick one up from the side of the road if it were NOSB.
