I am replying because i don't recall seeing this specific question
addressed, altho i maybe just missed it.
I seem to recall seeing 2 articles on beam filters in the old CQ
mag. One wasn't much - just basically putting a pot to variable
bypass the thing for selectivity control in the "ACCEPT" ( 1020
pass ) position.
The OTHER article was something on how to use the innards of the
things, that is, by removing the innards. Of course there's no call to
do that. However if i recall correctly, the article either showed or
talked about the circuit and the coil and capacitor values. Now after
all this i have to say i don't have a clue as to the actual date of
magazine number, so you're on your own. I have it "somewhere"
but i am still climbing the organization slope; if i find it i will post
the information.
I have not used the beam filters but substantial years back i was
using a TCS as novice rig. I used some audio filter black box i
had found on surplus store shelves - it was marked "595 cycles".
It did a good job, actually too good, as it rang like crazy, making
it a bit tuff to lissen to for a long periods. I don't recall what the
thing was out of, but i saw several such filter units surplus back
then. Probably i could have damped down its response with some
external resistors. I don't think the beam filters have that problem.
The Navy beam filters are actually kind of neat looking and a
moderately useful accessory to a period Navy receiver.
