I have no idea regarding current broadcasting
in Europe, having left Germany in 1971, but
many broadcast stations were on frequencies
below 500 kHz back then. They were sort of
the equivalent of the old "clear-channel" radio
stations we used to have in the USA before
the proliferation of AM broadcast licenses led
to every podunk town having its own station.

I never saw a QTE on LF. The SCR-291 didn't
do that. It was common for flight facilities
to transmit on LF and receive on HF. Both in
ZI and not. Europe had a broadcast band down
there, and they still do. Weather broadcasts
were on LF and HF then. Trivia 73 Clete
