Dave, i was thinking a little bit up from the AM calling freq,
29.0 - like maybe 29010 or 29015. Of course, that might
be a moot point when operating a superregen receiver.
I suppose my thinking was to stay off the calling freq
but within nearby enuff that DXers or other seekers
would scan it. I do think 10M is more practical, and might
be a real kick when the next propagation maximum is
here. Wouldn't an interstate QSO on a TBY be a hoot?
Trying a Clown Band crystal would at least provide "proof
of concept", whether this simple idea is going to work out
with minimum modification to the radio. BTW on the GB
list we are calling this oscillator circuit "the Jones Oscillator"
after Frank Jones, the reknown 1930s radio author who
came up with a simple push pull CW transmitter, i think
maybe using some dualtriode like 6A6 if i recall right.
Some decades ago i obtained a Japanese Model Year
94 Type 6 walkie talkie, the one tube thingee, my first.
The guy i got it from said he had literally picked it up
from in front of a bulldozer at Aircraft Equipment &
Salvage, a former surplus dealer in So. Seattle. This one
didn't have the little card with the schematic (such as
it is), so i was winging it. I rigged up some power and
figured out which pins to connect a headphone to. I
was rewarded by the steady rushing sound of the
superregen receiver. As i tuned across the range on
the lower band, the first voice i heard was saying,
"Give me back my radio, robber!". 30+ years it
hadn't operated, and when fired up it picks up some
kind of channel feud going on, on the Clown Band.
It seemed in those days some folks liked to spend
time just driving around pretending they were
highway patrol or whatever, stopping only for
restroom breaks and coffee refills. -Hue
