Really found it this time :).
Major clue was that the S-meter, added by the previous owner/modifier,
no longer did anything (I had a dim recollection that it originally worked).
Measurement revealed that the cathode voltage of the 2nd IF stage (the
voltage there being measured for an S-meter indication) didn't vary with
signal level. Further measurement showed a solid 0v on the screen of this
tube. Dreaded direct short via screen bypass capacitor.
Receiver now restored to original sensitivity - with and without the BFO.
And the S-meter gives sensible indications.
Now .. do I pull the Arcturus 6R7 and keep it as a spare?
