Does your final tuning say 3 or 7 MC?
Don't trust the signal strength on your portable.
You need a reliable test instrument or, barring that,
a friend who is close enough to check on-the-air,
but not in your near field. 4-5 miles should be OK.
Have him use similar, resonant antennas to monitor on
both freqs and report signal strengths. This will tell
you if it's "real" or not.
