I've read of "mine companies" attached
at the regimental level, specifically detailed to this duty,
as well as placing and protecting mine fields.
Whether it was good or crummy duty depended on 
who you asked and what the line companies were
facing at the moment.  Most of the time, late in the war,
 "companies" could actually field little more than a 
couple of understrength squads.

My daddy, 12th Infantry 4th Division, vet of 5 campaigns,
Soldiers Medal, Bronze Star, CIB, plus many other decorations,
while he wasn't specifically in a mine company,
said it might as well have been his story.
