While on the subject, there is, or was, a 225 - 400 MHz UHF
antenna for aircraft, and it was about 8 " high, 8 " long, and about
1 " wide.  There was a nylon-like seperator between the top
and the bottom sections.  The coax connected into a plug at
the bottom, and the plug continued up into the hollow insides
of the antenna.  The coax which came out of the top of the plug,
(inside the antenna), just stuck up a few inches, and without any
termination.  I suspect the VHF antenna we're talking about is
engineered along the same lines.        73   Clete
