The problem is
getting folks on the air regularly. More and more it seems like the
majority need to be led to operate, by a net or some special event. If
25% of the guys who check into the Collins net 'for the numbers' would
get on a few times a week, it would make all the difference. Instead
it seems like folks want to get on long enough to tell everyone what
they have for gear, then disappear.

Amen!

Same problem out here on the West Coast, 30 - 40 check-ins on the Wednesday
night AMI net but virtually no activity any other day of the week. Lots of
big iron out here too but seems like more interest in collecting the hardware
than using it.

Same here in UK. Used to be a great atmosphere on the BA channels. Weekends,
every lunchtime. Then a certain few, bent on self adulation, and those of
little ability, came on and took over.

It got so that if one dare try and use some bit of WW2 junk powered from a
cycle lamp battery all you got was the 'your signals too weak, cant read you'
attitude. The 'experimentation' side of the hobby is right low. All that's
wanted are sigs running 100W or more, no one wants to listen anymore. And God
help anyone using a carbon mic, wow, the comments on the modulation, well.

It makes me laugh, there's a few here who take great care to get hifi
quality AM then transmit it on a ham radio band with noise and squeeks, pops and
crackles, qrm and mush where none of the 'quality' can be appreciated. All thats
needed is a carbon mic in the cathode of a tube and hey presto,
communication.

Still, funny old hobby ain't it.

Ben.
