[Milsurplus] BC-611 to external antenna

This reminds me of something i read a few years back. I didn't understand 
how it could
be true, but the fellow is trustworthy. Seems they were trying out a couple 
BC-611
and he touched his's antenna to a metal flagpole, and the range increased. 
That
doesn't seem likely, does it, since there's an issue with matching. I could 
maybe see
that reception "might" be improved.
The 611 apparently has the receiver sensitivity for DX. A friend had his 
channeled up
on 4495 and said that in darkness hours, he could receive some kind of 
station out
of China.
