Three years back on we got fragments of SAQ on a battery-powered
DZ-2/dyno-pack/loop (yes, the complete set) Location was Hilton Head
Island, SC.

Battery power for AC-line isolation. Island for proximity to sea
which seems to make very big diffrence

This July a 17kc -> 80kc upconverter & a Lowe HF 150 were employed
(Lowe only goes dfown to 30kc). Antenna was 3' square loop of
computer IDE cable (40 conductor) that with .1 mfd resonated @ 17kcs.

SAQ was there but perhaps 30db down in noise. Again only got frag.s

Loc'n island again, this time Hunting about 30 mi.s north of Hilton Head

Have tried PC w. spectran & same loop in Atlanta w/o a hint of SAQ.
However since SAQ rocks along @ about 18wpm, needed spectran
window so wide it doesn't bode well.

SAQ used throughut WW2 as pt-to-pt between Grimeton & Riverhead LI.
Solid round the clock. But by moving rx 900 mi south to SC, things
change a lot for the worse.

Another unexploited idea is 2 rx loc'ns separated by, say, 100 mi.s
& then cros-correlate. However the atmospherics down there are
heard world wide & I think both rx-s wud hear same racket as
correlated noise

Clete u sed:

> What I'm hinting at: you can do it without a large
outside antenna if you can make a good tuned loop with
built-in amplifiers. (Max signal is in the plane of the loop.)

yep, like Gabby Hayes, u sed a mouthful... but built-in amps probably
not needed

Getting SAQ a neat challenge
