Well, of _course_ they were. It was recorded using boatanchor gear,
so how could it be other than perfectly clear?

Today is one of the two _special_ days each year that I remember my
dad, who was at Hickam that morning. He was coming back from off-post,
happy as could be, with a bottle of beer in each hand, when a fighter
tried to kill him. Fortunately for him, he saw it coming, and jumped
into a pipeline trench for cover. The trench turned out to be about 15
feet deep, which he hadn't expected, but the dirt was soft and the
pipe hadn't been placed, so he had an easy landing. He told me he hit
on his feet and never spilled a drop. As soon as he could, he got out,
ran back on-post, and did his duty until he was discharged in late
1945. He was on Guadalcanal, Efate, and other interesting places in
the South Pacific.

He was a superb Chet Atkins style guitarist, as well as a military EOD
specialist and (later) a brilliant mechanical design engineer. His
proudest boast, when he was talking about EOD, was to hold up both
hands, spread his fingers, and say "Ten!"

He taught me how to squeeze single shots off a .45 Thompson set for
full-auto. Tricky. He taught me lots of more important stuff, too, and

                               I miss him.

Gentlemen, I give you "Absent friends".

We need a set ceremony for this each year, such as the French Foreign
Legion has for Camerone Day. Ceremony and tradition are *important*.
