My Webster dictionary indicates that phrase
"dead rekoning" came into use in 1613, and
is based on speed, direction, time and drift.
I've always related it to "live" rekoning with
radios and/or stars, meaning something that
did something that I could interpet. "Dead"
also can mean exact as "dead center" and
"dead ahead". Those P-38'could have used
accurate Navy hand-made charts as long as
the pilots stayed some distance from the small
islands. TRIVIA
