I know Radioplane made a lot of target drones for the services, the
later ones with McCullough O-100 2-stroke, 4 cylinder engines.  They
were small, fast and cheap (read as: easily expendable), and they
could clock in over 200 mph without a lot of effort.

Marty, you're right, the 5 reed systems were bang-bang setups but at
least they didn't use rubber bands for escapement power.  :)   I don't
know what the later ones had for control surface drive, but they
didn't have to be a whole lot of sophisticated if the guy on the
ground had a clue what he was doing.  (Imagining a B-17 with a
Galloping Ghost rig operating the tail feathers ... *shudder*)  Okay,
maybe a little sophistication is needed.

I'd love to have a couple of those old drones.  They'd be the ultimate
R/C model in my book.  :)
