After reading the article in question (I just put the link in my previous
email from work, in a hurry), this is the gist of it: the LS-50 fits in the
GU-50 socket, and vice versa as well. The problem is that the original LS-50
cage which holds the tube has a smaller diameter into which the GU-50 won't
fit. The LS-50 fits in the larger diameter GU-50 mounting cage. The article
about the socket was actually manufacturing the socket (from a mixture of
epoxy resin and ceramic powder) without the mounting cage, to accommodate
either tube.
This was part of a larger article about building audio amps (see,
audiophools will end up skyrocketing the cheapo GU-50 tubes, if they become
fashionable...) with GU-50's or LS-50's interchangeably, without modifying
original sockets. As the article says, in an audio amplifier there is no
need for the mounting cage, as it's not in a military, high vibration,
rattling around environment.
BTW the author of the article also has an article there about building a ham
transmitter with LS-50/GU-50's...

"Each to his own,"
but I'm unwilling to make that kind of change in a mil radio from WWII.
Perhaps someone would be willing to trade,
expensive tube-for-expensive-tube?
