Ray, i gotta say i prefer the early ones. They have the "more conventional"
crystal filter circuit, which actually lends itself to improvements like changing
the in-out switch to an actual phasing control, nondestructively, or if you don't
care to do that, i maintain the older circuit with the separate secondary and
primary allows better adjustment for the selectivity degree you prefer. Altho
at this point that's just my opinion. Now, also the antenna trimmer knob.
I passed by several nice Heathkit SW radios in their heyday, refused to be
a customer, because i always felt any serious SW radio had to have an
antenna trimmer control. Now as regards best, for modern usefulness: the
LF band is useless - forget the miniscule level of activity on 500 kcs. or
thereabouts - you can follow that with a converter or a sound card, if you
really want - but the early versions without the LF band give you a little
advantage in bandspread, and they have the aura of being just a bit more
exotic. -Hue Miller
