According to the Navy's official history and
to documents signed by Admiral King himself,
found by the hard work of Gordon White:
while some Navy units had VHF early
( usually W.E. model 233, only later called AN/ARC-4),
Navy aircraft VHF was not generally available
until after the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October of 1944.
Some air units in the Leyte Order of Battle were assigned VHF,
but a great many were still HF.
U.S. Navy aircraft relied on HF for 35 of 45 months of war.
The W.E. model 233 story is similar to the SCR-293 story.
