Jay is correct. Imagine yourself aboard a WWII aircraft carrier making
20 knots, trying to pull an RU out of an SBD on the flight deck in the
rain. Rain (mixed with salt) running down your collar, dripping on the
equipment, following cable paths to connectors, etc.....way of life for
a tech in that period. Apparently WWII Navy aircraft canopies
apparently leaked like a sieve, judging by the URs generated on them. I
have an ARMN article about protecting the connectors from the incessant
dripping inside the planes but it's down south at the moment. The radio
covers helped the black boxes but did little for the connecting
hardware. I tend to agree that the covers had little to do with the
classification of the equipment. I have canvas covers for the GO-9,
ARB, ATD, ZB and even a few items of *test equipment* so the
environmental aspect makes a lot more sense to my way of thinking.
