First off, I've never met the guy. However, in general, it is possible to be a
very expert USER of electronics (or many other things) without understanding how
the guts work.

Years ago, I groused to Doc. Edgerton (of strobe fame) that color film chemistry
was very complicated and I didn't understand it. How could I use it
intelligently w/o understanding it. He basically told me to treat it as a black
box and forget about the guts, and he was right.
