My 618S1 was a USAF system, The service manual for that radio covers
618S1 to 4 with no SMO in any of the series. at least in the service
manual I have. I always thought the ARC-38 was the series with the SMO.
Although the manual nowhere addressed the SMO system the radios frame is
stenciled and their are the three additional plugs for a SMO and 500 Kc
generator, but I always thought that adding the SMO option would make it
a ARC-38, note that I am only talking about the 38 and not the SSB A
version. also if you take all the channel junk in the 38/38A head and
cut it in half the mode, BFO, RF gain and audio controls are all the
same as the 618S require. the twenty position channel selector will not
work the same being that the 618 used a twenty four position switch and
a crystal bank selector but I do have it working to change channels.
sorry about killing a ARC-38 head but Fair has several, but not one 618S
head.
